Thoracic breathing is a particular type of breathing we use during Pilates exercises, it takes some practice so persevere and eventually you will get it right.

1. Start in your correct standing posture place your hands on your rib cage so you can feel what is going on.

2. You are going to imagine that your lungs are like bellows so as you breathe in your rib cage will expand as you breathe out your rib cage will close down.

3. The breathing is done slightly differently to normal , on the in breath you will breathe through your nose on your out breath you will blow out through your mouth like blowing through a straw.

4. Practice this as much as you can using your hands to feel your lungs inflating and deflating. when ready take your hands back to your sides and practice in front of a mirror try to make sure your shoulders are not raising up round your ears.
